So, you’ve decided to enter the APEA Awards, great choice! You’ve already taken the first step towards rewarding your team with the attention and recognition their hard work deserves. Now it’s time to make those entries shine.
If you’ve ever promised yourself you’d start “when you have a spare moment” only for weeks to slip by, you’re not alone. Before you know it, the deadline is looming, and you’re scrambling to do justice to your brilliant project, or worse, you don’t enter at all.
Let’s change that. Writing a winning APEA Awards entry doesn’t have to be stressful or time-consuming. With a little focus and some smart planning, it can be straightforward, even enjoyable. Here are our top tips to help you craft a strong, stress-free submission.
Before you put pen to paper, take time to read through the award categories. Pick the ones that best align with your project or achievement.
It’s crucial to get this right. A misplaced entry can hurt your chances. For example, we have seen fantastic ‘Forecourt Project’ submissions entered under ‘Non-Retail Fuel Installation’ or excellent ‘Health & Safety’ initiatives in the ‘Innovation’ category, only to be overlooked because they were in the wrong place.
You do not need to have your categories finalised to register. In fact, signing up early helps as you can see the entry questions and scoring criteria in advance. It takes just two minutes, and once you have registered, you can save and return to your entry as often as you like. There is no need to finish it in one sitting.
Read through the entry questions and judging criteria for your chosen categories. You can even download or print them for easy reference.
Spend a few minutes thinking about what makes your project stand out. What impact did it have? What results can you prove? Consider pulling together colleagues for a quick brainstorming session to gather insights and examples.
You do not need thousands of words to impress the judges. Write with the assumption that they know nothing about you or your project. Be clear, be thorough, and avoid repetition. Every word should earn its place.
Do not let worries about writing hold you back. Judges are looking at the strength of your entry, not your grammar. If you want a fresh set of eyes, ask a colleague to proofread your draft. Or contact us. Once you are registered, our team is happy to help you format your entry for clarity. We are completely independent of the judging process.
The strongest entries back up their claims with proof. This does not need to be complicated. Think photos, customer testimonials, third-party reports, hard data, or case studies. Supporting evidence can be uploaded easily through the awards platform and helps judges see the value and results of your work.
It might sound obvious, but it is worth repeating. Do not miss the deadline. Last year, 16 organisations started their entries but never submitted them. That is 16 missed chances to be a finalist or winner, gain industry recognition, and benefit from the marketing boost that comes with it.
This year’s deadline is Friday 19 September 2025. Aim to finish early so you are not caught out. Remember, in and on time beats perfect but late, every time.
The APEA Awards are free to enter and you can submit as many categories as you like. Start your entry today and give your team the recognition they deserve.
